New Brochure: La comtesse Potocka, égérie de Proust

The Société des Amis de Marcel Proust has just published a new brochure presenting a work from its collections: the portrait of the Comtesse Potocka by Maria Prévot.

This painting entered our collections at the end of 2022, when a young historian working for a Paris antiques dealer contacted us, "thinking that this canvas might interest an institution or a collector passionate about Marcel Proust and his world". He was right to think so, this acquisition project corresponding exactly to what we are looking for to enrich our holdings. The deal, funded from the association's own resources, was therefore quickly concluded.

This brochure is intended to present this new work, through three texts. Jean-Yves Tadié evokes the woman the countess was and what her relations with Marcel Proust were. Oriane Beaufils sketches a portrait of the mysterious Maria Prévot, situating the painting within a stylistic family then in vogue among artists. Finally, we are reissuing the text that Proust published, under a pseudonym, in Le Figaro of 13 May 1904. In it he describes, with a mixture of irony and admiration, the salon held by this countess, whose portrait will henceforth occupy a fine place on the walls of our museum.
